Chapter Four
"What's wrong, mate?" Josh Anderson asked as Wills stormed into the room, threw himself on his bed and groaned loudly into the pillow.
"Josh, I need a favor."
What favor could he possibly give Wills of Wales?
Wills took a deep breath. "I need you to go out with a girl."
"She's ugly," was Josh's first guess.
"Then angels are ugly too," Wills said.
"What? Is she an airhead?" Josh asked.
"No, she's into literature. Poems and stuff." Wills said.
"Then what's wrong with her, man?" he wondered.
"She hates me," Wills informed.
"Is she the girl that you made trouble with-"
Wills groaned again. He hated to be reminded of that night. "Yeah." he said quickly. He updated Josh on his wooing tactics and how the date on Friday came to be.
"So she still thinks your friend is the one who likes her," Josh wanted to confirm.
"Yes," Wills said.
"And you still need someone to go out with her."
"Yes," Wills said again.
"And you couldn't get Harry to do it?" Josh asked.
"Nope," Wills said. Harry had put his foot down.
"Why me?" Josh laughed.
"You're the only one of the guys without a girl," Wills explained.
Josh nodded. Wills was kind enough not to say why he was single. Josh wasn't in Eton because he was part of England's privileged elite but because he father was a professor there and he had gained a scholarship at a national contest. And he still needed to work part time after school to pay his tuition. His lack of social standing was a turn off to most girls they associated with. Sure, he could hold his own on the looks department but in a school where good looks were rampant it was nothing extraordinary.
"So, go out with her? You owe me." Wills reminded.
Josh laughed. How could he forget. One day he had a big exam at Eton and the prince saved his butt by covering for him at his work in McDonald's. "And you looked so cute in that uniform," he laughed, imitating the voice of a grandmother.
Wills scrunched up his nose as all the horrible memories that came back. "Just remember these two sentences," Josh had advised. "'I'm sorry' and 'do you want chips with that?" All these people had come up to him and said "You know, you look a lot like Prince William." Wills would shake his head fiercely and say, "No my name is Josh. See the nametag? J-O-S-H. Josh." If his father ever knew! And when he got himself locked in the walk-in freezer! And when the shake machine broke down on him. Not to mention when he had to clean the men's and ladies' room. Later in the dorm that day he showered twice and he felt as if he still smelled like burgers and fries.
"I don't think that should be considered a favor. I almost got fired." Josh reminded.
"I lost a couple hundred pounds. They found it. Eventually."
Wills looked desperate. "Okay, I'll go out with her." Josh consented
"Good," Wills sighed with relief. "I'll have the limo pick you up at 6:30 so you'll be in front of her house by 7. Wear a suit."
"Where am I taking her? How am I suppose to know what to say?"
"Leave everything to me," Wills assured. "Just show up."

It was Friday morning. Wills got on the phone and made reservations for that night. A candlelit dinner for two at an expensive restaurant. Then a moonlight row in the lake. He didn't like putting Josh and Jen in such lovey-dovey situations but the character he gave his friend was that of a romantic. Jen would wonder if Wills had set her up with a schizophrenic if Josh went out with her to a wrestling match and for street hot-dogs later on.
"Albert," Wills called. "I'm going out tomorrow but I'm not going to use my radio. Josh is. I'm going to be with you tailing him and his date in a van."
"I don't think the family would approve of you going out without surveillance." Albert said. "I only let you go on Thursday nights is because of that radio."
"I'll be in the van with you the whole time," Wills pointed out.
"And if one of us gets hungry or needs to go to the loo? Will you still be by my side during those times too?"
"I'll wear a radio," Wills conceded.
"It won't make a difference. Josh and your radio signals will interfere with each other not to mention the technology complications in the van."
Afterall he did it looked to Wills that he was going to have to cancel Jen's date tonight afterall.
"I'll allow this if someone else in the family knows," Albert sighed.
"Harry knows!" Wills declared brightly.
Albert shot the prince a look. "An adult."
Wills thought. His father and grandmother would never allow it. Who? Who?

Wills stood outside his grandfather's study.
Albert cocked his head toward the closed door. "Ask him."
Wills took a deep breath. "Grandfather, I have to let my friend use my radio device while I watch with Albert in the van." The words came out in a rush.
Philip looked at his grandson calmly as if this were a regular request. "And why may I ask?"
"Would you believe it's a science project?" Wills said in a voice that's said. I'm lying. I'm letting you know that I'm lying but that's all I'm letting you know.
Philip analyzed this. Only two things could make a member of the royal family this nervous. It was either a scandal in the papers or love. "It's a girl isn't it?"
"Would you believe it's a science project?" Wills asked again.
Philip nodded. "All right but don't be out of Albert's sight for more than five minutes."
"Done," Wills promised.
Philip shook his head as he watched his grandson leave.
"Good afternoon Grandmama," Wills greeted cheerily as he kissed her on the cheek on his way out.
The Queen looked out, astonished. "Was that William?" she asked her husband.
Philip nodded. "Yup yup."
Her eyes grew wide. "Our William?"
"Umm-hmmm," more nodding.
"What happened?" she wanted to know.
He let his voice drop in a conspiratorial manner, "It's a girl."
"Oh..."

Chapter Five
"Mate, you there?" Josh heard Wills ask. The ear piece was barely visible. The wire trailed down his neck to the device at his hip. As long as he could convince Jen not to neck him she wouldn't notice.
"Yeah, I'm here," Josh said. He tried to loosen his tie. It was a little too tight. He looked around the limousine. Wills wanted him to take this girl out in style.
"Be sure to say nice things about me," Wills reminded.
"Nice things. Got it."
"What do you see?"
"Wills , we just pulled up to the house. Calm down."
The chauffeur looked back and gave Josh a look. If the royal family hadn't picked up the tab he wouldn't have taken this job. Crazy teenagers were too much to handle at his age.
Josh was embarrassed. "Wills ," he said, his voice low. "This girl better be worth it."

Jen watched from her bedroom window. He was here! She excitedly jumped off her bed. The material of her dress rustled as she ran down the stairs.
"Jen you look beautiful," the woman looked at her sister's daughter with pride.
Jen kissed her on the cheek and took the coat she was holding out. "Thanks Aunt Eulalie." Jen opened the door.
A boy was there posed to ring the doorbell. "Hi," he held out the bouquet of flowers in his hands awkwardly. "I'm Josh Anderson."
Jen looked at him. He had jet-black hair that swept across his forehead and his dark brown eyes looked at her shyly.
When she didn't respond he expounded on his identity, "I'm Wills ' friend."
Jen snapped out of her dazed state. "I'm sorry. It's just that I expected you to look like Will-" she shook her head. "Silly of me. Anyway, you look hot."
Hot?! Wills ' blood boiled at the word. What had he been thinking? He should've set Jen up on a date with someone ugly.
"We have a date tonight," Jen said, blushing as she said it.
Josh gave her a smile. "Yes we do."

Josh looked back as he went ahead first to open the car door for her.
"What's she wearing?" Wills asked.
"What am I a fashion designer," Josh watched as Jen kept promising to be home by curfew.
"What's she wearing?" Wills wanted to know.
"Some- this thin strapped dress. I think the color is burgundy. Hard to tell in the dark. The skirt's a nice length. Not too long. Not too short."
Wills tried to visualize that and groaned inwardly. He was missing all that?
"I hope we have a good time tonight," Jen told Josh as she got into her seat.
"That's what's been intended for your pleasure," Josh informed. He told the chauffeur their next destination.
"So you planned all this? Just for me?" Jen asked, taking in the leather seats and mini-refrigerator.
"No, actually Wills did. He's a great friend," Josh dropped the hint.
"I'm sure he is," Jen smiled.
Josh and Wills both let out a slight sigh of relief. Phase one of the date had gone smoothly. They could only hope that the rest of the date goes just as well.

"So you don't think Wills is good-looking," Josh said, as he opened the door for her at the restaurant.
"He's all right. But once that wart on his nose grows and that bald spot kicks in..." She smiled to show she was only joking.
But Wills couldn't see her smile. What wart? What bald spot! Wills panicked, his fingers scanning his face for the non-existent blemish. He ran his fingers through his thick blonde hair. "What is she talking about?"
Josh laughed at his friend's scared tone but hid it behind a cough. "Reservation for Anderson, party of two," Josh told the maitre'd.
The old guy with a slight mustache who was wearing a tux and was half Josh's height scanned through the roster. "Your name doesn't appear on the list."
"What's going on?" Jen asked Josh, worried.
"I don't know," Josh did a double take. "Wills Windsor made the reservations for us."
"Oh," the man raised an eyebrow at the name. He checked the list again. "Ah, yes. Come with me."
Josh cast a glance at Jen. See the power of Wills ' name? he seemed to be saying.
The maitre'd led them to a secluded spot in the room that overlooked the lighted bay.
"So you're really the romantic." Jen said. "I can tell by your choice of poetry."
Poetry? She thinks he had a thing for poetry? "Well, what other choice do I have but be a romantic when all my thoughts are of you." Josh cleared his throat. "But do you know who's a real romantic? Wills . He just makes girls faint in his arms."
Death, death, thought Wills as he overheard the conversation. Hitting his fist against the desk in the van. Josh was making him out to be some kind of playboy. Wills told him so.
Josh quickly amended. "But he still doesn't have a girlfriend poor guy. Really. I mean we have dances and stuff and he and I would be the only ones without dates."
"Now he'll be the only one without a date. You'll have me," Jen smiled about to touch Josh's hand.
Josh snatched his hand away. Wills was going to kill him!
"You make me sound pathetic," Wills hissed.
"So how do you know William?" Jen asked.
"I'm his dormmate."
Jen rolled her eyes. "I'm sure all the Etonians say that."
"Seriously," Josh defended. "He keeps me up all night with his snoring."
"Prince Wills does not snore!" Jen exclaimed.
"Sounds like a failed airplane engine," Josh informed, grinning.
"You're dead Anderson!" Wills threatened.
Wills . Wills . Jen chanted in her brain. That's all they had talked about all evening. It was as if there were three of them on the date instead of just two. "Tell me about yourself." Jen said.
"Myself?" Josh asked.
"Yeah? What does your father do? What do you like on your pizza? Is it possible to die laughing? If the world was going to blow in three seconds what would you do? Anything."
"My father teaches Physics. Pizza? Pepperoni. I think no. Has something to do with body reaction. I'd scream. And I'm not a prince like Wills ." he shrugged.
"That was nice," Jen said. "But you mentioned Wills . I mean, I know it seems he's our only link at the moment but there must be something else we have in common. Tell me, what do you think about El Niño?"

Chapter Six
There was a loud pounding and the force was enough to make the place shake.
Wills opened the back door of the van. "You're not supposed to-"
"El Niño?" Josh yelled.
"I do not snore!" Wills yelled back.
"Excuse me," Albert coughed. "You do."
"What else can I be but a romantic when all I think of is you?" Wills shouted.
"I was improvising!"
"Don't improvise so well!"
"What would you do if the world was going to blow up in three seconds?" Josh echoed the question. "You like this girl? Wills are you nuts?"
"I do like her. Where does she think you are anyway?"
"Made some excuse about using the loo," Josh said. "And I checked out those menus as I was walking out! French? You know I'm not good in that subject. What if I order raw monkey brains?"
"Look," Wills said. "Just go back in there. Suggest stuff to Jen so I can hear. I'll translate."
"William, I am this close to telling her who you are!"
"Don't do that. Josh, don't do that." Wills pleaded.
Josh shook his head and muttered something under his breath about the things he did for friendship.

I'm going to kill him. Josh thought as he rowed the boat on the moonlighted lake. He knew his arms were going to get cramped before the night is over. Wills might be used to stretching his arm muscles to the limit because he was on the Eton's rowing team. But not him.
Jen looked at Josh in front of her. He seemed to be in a world of his own. "I'm sorry," she apologized.
"About what?" he asked.
"I was such in a hurry to meet you that I ruined the romance," Jen said. "You just sounded so sweet in your notes. I was thinking I had to meet you."
"I'm sorry I turned out to be such a disappointment," Josh said.
"I'm the disappointment," Jen said. "The poems you wrote were dedicated to a goddess. Not to some plain person like me."
"You are a goddess," to Wills was his unspoken thought.
"And I felt bad for Wills being a telephone between us," Jen continued. "I mean him running back and forth between us delivering messages must've been tiring for him. And here we are again talking about Wills !" she laughed.
"What did she say about me?" Wills asked.
All right! Josh decided. I quit. He was sick of hearing Jen pay him compliments he didn't deserve and Wills screaming in his ear. "There's something you have to know," he told Jen. He lowered the volume on the radio.
"Josh?" Wills called when he noticed the decrease in frequency. "Are you there?"
"I did not write those notes," Josh began.
"Josh you're far too modest," Jen said.
"I didn't write those notes. Wills did."
"So Wills wrote them and you sent them to me," Jen said, not getting the picture.
Josh felt his heart breaking. She was so innocent. So naive. He let go of the oars and placed his hands on her shoulders.
Jen looked at his hands. It was the first time they made long physical contact all night.
"I'm not the one passionately in love with you," Josh said looking into her eyes. "Wills is."
It took a while for the words to sink in. Prince Wills was in love with her? Prince Wills was in love with her. Prince Wills was in love with her! Yippee! Wait! her brain warned before she could die of over excitement. That meant that- when Will came over- he had lied to her! "Of all the rotten stinking things!" she exclaimed standing up suddenly.
Her maneuver rocked the boat and both her and Josh fell head first into the lake.

Chapter Seven
Jen sputtered out the murky water as she waded towards the shore.
Josh collapsed gasping for air beside her. Good, he was alive. Now she can kill him. Her hands went around his neck. "I didn't tell you the whole story," he wheezed as his oxygen supply ran out.
Jen released him and he took in generous deep breaths. She put her hands on her hips. "What now? Will's an alien from outer space which is suppose to make-up for his wacky behavior?"
"No. This." He showed her the mike.
Jen stared at it. So Wills wasn't just a liar. He was an eavesdropper as well! And to think she was just starting to like the guy! She strangled the wire as if by strangling the wire she was strangling Wills . "You scoundrel!" she yelled into the mike. "I never want to see you again! You're despicable!"
Josh cleared his throat. "Um, he can't hear you. I turned the volume down."
Jen looked up. "What? You mean he doesn't know that you told me?"
Josh nodded.
She started to laugh.
"You're not mad?" Josh asked. Something was not right here.
Jen shook her head. "I'm a woman. We don't get mad. We get even!" She looked at the mike. So Wills had a crush on her? An idea was slowly forming in her mind. "How would you like to give Mr. I-Own-The-Throne Windsor a taste of his own medicine?" she asked Josh.

Wills adjusted the control panels in the van frantically. The last thing he had heard was a huge SPLASH and then nothing. "Josh." he called. "You there?" suddenly the reception was back again. He could hear Jen giggling. That was strange. The radio signal was off for just a few minutes. They had barely been talking in monosyllables before. What did Josh do to make her giggle?
"What does it mean to snog?' Jen asked flirtatiously.
The deep male voice that responded didn't sound like Josh. "I'll show you."
A long silence. Too long.
"Mmm. I doubt Wills could ever kiss as well as you," Jen purred.
Wills stared at the headphone. Josh was kissing Jen!

Josh had bite his lower lip from laughing as Jen made loud noises as she kissed her own palm. She was holding the mike directly over it so it was positive that Wills was hearing everything.
"Why did we waste our time trying to talk to each other tonight?" she winked at Josh. "This is a much better way to use our lips."
They both heard Wills groan some unintellectual sound.
Josh couldn't help it. He let out a laugh.
Jen's eyes made contact with his.
Had he just given them away?

"So that's where you're ticklish," Wills heard Jen say, an impish tone in her voice.
Wills shot a look at Albert and gave orders to switch off the equipment and bring him back to the dorm. He had enough for one night.

Wills watched from his dorm room as the limo pulled up the bend.
Josh got out and whispered something to Jen. I had a wonderful time tonight. Let's do this again sometime. Wills assumed he was saying. If he had actually heard the conversation he would've known Josh was actually saying, "He's watching from the window."
Jen looked up and saw Wills peeking through the curtains from one of the high windows. Jen kissed Josh for sake of Wills ' viewing and retreated back into the limo.
Wills watched as the vehicle drove away.

"You were suppose to date her not snog her," Wills yelled, pinning Josh against the wall the moment he stepped into the room.
"What can I do the girl was all over me?" Josh grinned. He threw his arms up. "Besides dating... snogging... they're practically synonyms."
"You're all wet," Wills observed, letting go.
Josh changed into his nightclothes. "Yeah, when she lunged for me we fell off the boat."
Lunged for him? "Why did you turn your radio off?" Wills demanded.
"Oh this?" Josh said, handing the device back to Wills . "It was a private moment. You don't want to hear the details."
"Oh, I heard plenty. You laughing. So that's where you're ticklish." he mimicked Jen's voice.
"Oh my. You heard all that!" Josh feigned surprise. "It must've turned back on when she um... touched me."
The way he said it struck fear into Wills s heart. "You guys didn't-" he couldn't bear to finish the sentence.
"Prince, what are you thinking? No! She's still a lady and I'm still a gentleman. My gosh I have a few kisses and you're already thinking I'm somekind of make-out king!" Josh tried to take note of Wills ' expression so he could tell Jen in the morning. He licked his lips for effect. "But they were some kisses," he sighed.
"Good night," Wills growled, switching off the light.
"By the way, I invited Jen to see our soccer practice tomorrow afternoon. Hope that's perfectly fine with you."
"Perfectly fine." Wills said in a voice that indicated it that it was anything but.
